Stearic acid — also called octadecanoic acid — is an 18-carbon chain fatty acid with a wide range of uses in industry and manufacturing. Traditionally, it is derived from animal products, tallow being one of its most abundant sources. However, it is possible to create 100% vegetable-based stearic acid.

Applications and Handling Guidelines
Stearic acid powder is used in the production of soaps, cosmetics and other personal care products. It is also used as a mold release agent and lubricant, and as an emulsifier in pharmaceutical manufacturing, among other applications.
Acme-Hardesty stearic acid powder has a shelf life of two years when kept unopened at ambient temperatures. It is non-toxic and not hazardous — however, when used in its powder form, appropriate precautions should be taken. Wear protective clothing, do not use around an open flame and seek first aid immediately if the powder is accidentally ingested.
